The ATA is an excellent place to learn taiko drumming - you get to have some exercise for your body and your brain, you can learn aspects of music you never knew existed, with excellent teaching from the team. Its also such a great place to make lasting friendships, with people from all around the world joining in :-) If you want to perform you can push yourself that bit further and learn things about yourself and the people you play with! Highly recommend joining up - or at least do a workshop to see what it’s all about.

The ATA/Taikoz provide wonderful and engaging taiko (drumming) classes. I had no musical experience when I started but the structure and talented teachers make it super achievable and fun. I now am in the onikenbai group which welcomes everyone at all levels plus saying you do a traditional Japanese dance is always a great conversation starter! If you have found this place, book in. You wont regret it!!

Are you interested in releasing yourself via music? Taikoz is one of the best places for that! The classes provide safe and inclusive atmosphere. You can feel so great about yourself by the end of the class each week. Not only you can learn basic Japanese taiko drum skill, but also you can learn something about Japanese language, society and people. If you are interested in, come and join us!

If you come here it'll change you. A famous taiko player once said at a presentation at my alma mater that you play taiko the way you live. I think that the artists at Taikoz and the Australian Taiko Academy play taiko the way they live. And because they live with determination, passion, and faith, the taiko they play emanates all of these things too. It's not an easy world but they showed me when I came here two years ago that you can make beautiful and inspiring art. Two years later that rings just as true. I think what it is is that this isn't just a school, it's a community? I've been in all sorts of performing arts spaces-- ballet, modern dance, hip hop-- and they can be scary. As a kid I'd come home crying and afraid to go back. Everyone wanted to be the best person in the room, which was literally impossible, right. So everyone was unhappy all the time. At ATA people want to meet you at your best. If you're confused someone will stick their head out to help you; if you want to do more someone will help you get there too. You can come in knowing nothing or too much for your own good and you'll still get a lifetime's wisdom and artistry from Taikoz members. And the community, those who've been playing at ATA for decades, they're just as incredible. There's institutional memory embedded in these bodies, their taiko, the dojo in Ultimo. Anyone can play taiko??? That's one of the things that ATA showed me. And by extension anyone can make art, anyone can make music, anyone can dance? So basically you can do anything. This is that kind of place. If you're ever in Sydney, or if you've lived here for ten years, or if you've always wanted to make something beautiful but been afraid to step out into the wild unknown-- come here. You can begin here.

Almost three years ago, after watching an inspiring concert by Taikoz, I decided to join the beginner's class of drumming and I haven't looked back. I've learnt a lot from all the wonderful and supportive teachers, joined in with the Taikoz community spirit and made many friends. I highly recommend you giving Taikoz a try, especially the fun introductory workshops 🤩
